Welcome. Here is some general background information about me and my practice to help you to determine if I am a good fit for you or your loved one.
As a therapist, I envision myself as a guide or facilitator. I believe that you have the resources within yourself to help you cope with whatever may be going on in your life. Sometimes it can be hard to recognize these resources in yourself, particularly when life gets difficult. So, it is my job to walk with you on your journey--for as long or as short as you may need or desire--and help you locate these strengths within yourself, and create healthy, effective ways for coping with life's problems. My aim is to help you feel valued and empowered.
I am trained in traditional "talk" therapy as well as play therapy. I believe that my creativity is one of my greatest strenghts. When you visit my office, you will also find drums and other instruments. Using music in therapy is another way that I often approach problems and solutions creatively with my clients. I work holistically--considering all aspects of a person.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with more than 10 years of experience working with children and their families in school, hospital, and private practice settings in New Orleans, Tallahassee, and Atlanta.
I began my career as a special education teacher in New Orleans Public Schools through Teach For America (TFA). Through witnessing the immense emotional and psychological needs of my students and how these impeded their ability to be successful in school, I felt called to join the counseling profession.
I earned my Master’s degree in Counseling with a specialization in School Counseling in 2003 from the University of New Orleans. During my doctoral studies in counseling, I focused on utilizing creativity in counseling, including Play Therapy with children and using music in therapy. My other specialties include adolescent and adult depression and anxiety, sexuality and 'coming out' concerns, GLBT couples and their families, divorce recovery for children, and substance abuse. These are some of the concerns that have brought many of my clients to me.
I participate in professional development and supervision regularly. I am a member of the Georgia Association for Play Therapy, Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia, and the Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Issues in Counseling.
